Academic Study of a Nude Male

photo

This is a reproduction of "Academic Study of a Male Nude" of 1821 by Eugene Delacroix.  The drawing was executed in black, white and red chalk and the artist was twenty-three when he drew this.  Delacroix had been born at Saint-Maurice near Paris and his biological father may have been the French statesman Talleyrand.  Orphaned at sixteen, he studied formally at two lyceums and 1815 began studying the style of Jacques-Louis David.  A commission four years later shows the influence of Raphael yet Delacroix was swept up in the rage for Romanticism which erupted in France in 1819.  Delacroix became a leading proponent of the style.  This masterpiece is 44.8 cm wide and 57.8 cm high and is in a private collection.
