James IV rex Scottorum

photo

This is a tribute to my fourteen greats grandfather and a reproduction of "James IV, king of Scots" of about 1503 by an anonymous artist.  James IV was one of the most successful Stewart kings and, through his marriage to Margaret Tudor of England, led to the union of the English and Scottish monarchies which foreshadowed the creation of the United Kingdom.  He died fighting the forces of his brother-in-law Henry VIII on Flodden's Field on September 9, 1513.  The original of this painting is in the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.

This is a reproduction of "Waiting for Something" of 2011 by Troy Caperton.  It is a painting symbolic of the universal yearning of youth for something more than he has ever known.  It can appear to a young man that he is naked to what may be coming down the road of life, but he yearns for it.  He waits for something.

Beloved of Hadrian

photo

This is a lovely image of the Farnese Antinous which is currently in the National Archeological Museum in Naples.  It is called the Antinous Farnese because of its prior location at the entrance of the Carracci Gallery in the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.  The statue was one of the myriads which were produced after the young man's death and deification in October, 130 CE.  He had been the beloved of the emperor for probably six years and the mythos of the young god was that he had laid down his earthly life as a sacrifice to the Olympians to save the life of his lover Hadrian.  The emperor in gratitude founded the city of Antinopolis at the site of the death and ordered the inclusion of Antinous into the ranks of the gods.

Academic Study of a Nude Male

photo

This is a reproduction of "Academic Study of a Male Nude" of 1821 by Eugene Delacroix.  The drawing was executed in black, white and red chalk and the artist was twenty-three when he drew this.  Delacroix had been born at Saint-Maurice near Paris and his biological father may have been the French statesman Talleyrand.  Orphaned at sixteen, he studied formally at two lyceums and 1815 began studying the style of Jacques-Louis David.  A commission four years later shows the influence of Raphael yet Delacroix was swept up in the rage for Romanticism which erupted in France in 1819.  Delacroix became a leading proponent of the style.  This masterpiece is 44.8 cm wide and 57.8 cm high and is in a private collection.
